It was a very busy summer with our club completing 3 major trail projects.

In Berlin we brought in 186 truckloads of new gravel for the Head Pond Connector Trail. This resurfaced a total of 1.75 miles and we are planning to apply for more grant funding in 2022 to resurface the remaining 2.13 miles.

In Stark we worked on the new Bell Hill Connector Trail with 30 volunteers spending over 550 hours to complete this new 1.25-mile long trail. The trail takes ATV traffic off 2.4 miles of Stark town roads and bypasses an old town bridge that is in danger of being closed down. We are hoping to extend this trail further to the east in future years taking ATV traffic off even more town roads in Stark and Dummer.

In Dummer we got grant funding to resurface Cedar Brook Road with 282 loads of clay gravel. This was enough gravel for the entire 2.53-mile length of Cedar Brook Road which had lost over 2” of fine gravel as dust during the dry summer of 2020.

We are planning to rebuild the rest of the Cedar Brook trail next summer and also build an extension trail to the Pontook Dam recreation area. This will provide access to bathroom facilities as well as a picnic area and fishing.

We now are faced with another large expense for the extension trail to Pontook Dam. We need to cut over a ½-mile of trail through the woods before next spring. Originally we had planned to cut this section by hand, but our volunteers were busy right up to mid-November completing work on the Bell Hill Connector trail.

To cut this trail by hand, it would take 8 volunteers cutting for 4 full days (a total of 32 man days of work). With cold weather in place and snow on the ground, it’s not a practical solution.

So our only choice is to hire a logger with machinery to cut the trail. This is going to cost the club two thousand dollars that is not eligible for grant reimbursement.

We know how all of you want new trails but we cannot do this alone. We need your help to fund this effort. Please consider a donation of $25.00 (or more if you can afford it) to help pay for the logging costs on the Cedar Brook Extension trail.

Thanks for your past support and we hope you will decide to join our club again in 2022. You may notice that we have raised our dues by $5.00 this year to help us keep up with our expenses. Hopefully you will agree with our Board Members in thinking this is a small price to pay to keep our trail system open and well maintained.

    Best Regards,

The Officers and Directors of the Milan Trail Huggers
